Chapter Management
- Fundraising
- Description: Teach members how to cultivate relationships with companies and other organizations, create and distribute proposals, market chapter to companies/organizations and be strategic with other fundraising activities. Understanding corporate funding cycles.
- Learning Objectives
- Learn how to write a proposal for sponsorship
- Learn how to create a strategic funding plan
- Learn how to create and cultivate relationships with corporations
- Recruitment/Retention
- Description: Teach members how to create a strategic marketing plan on campus to recruit new members. Learning to use current University to their advantage in recruiting. Address how to overcome the challenges of commuter schools. Teach members devices in retention of newly (old) members that also cultivates a leader succession culture in the chapter. Learn to identify what your members need (tutoring, social activities, graduate education, networking opportunities, etc.) so that you can create a comprehensive retention plan. How to incorporate Graduate Students into the chapter efforts.

- Project Management/Time Management/GPA Is Important
- Description: What are some key Project Management and Time Management Principles that can help you manage a strong chapter but keep your grades up. Show members how project management concepts can be applied to individual chapter activities. Discuss how to run a meeting effectively.

- Strategic Planning
- Description: Teach members how to create a strategic plan for the academic year to obtain individual chapter goals. How do you build your calendar? How will you strengthen your board and your membership? How do you incorporate the five (5) pillars of SHPE (Academics, Community Outreach, Chapter Development, Leadership Development and Professional Development)? This class should encompass all learning topics of NILA. This should be the culmination of the training, where Member culminates with a plan that they can execute with their executive board for the current year.

Leadership Development
- Communication
- Interpersonal Communications
- Description: Member will learn how to communicate with others in any circumstance. Whether in a stressful time period or when there is conflict in a group environment, they will learn how to handle any situation.
- Learning Objectives
- Learn conflict resolution concepts
- Learn about the communication process
- Public Speaking:
- Description: Members will learn from a certified Toastmaster speaker the tools to be an effective public speaker. It all takes practice. Member will be able to deliver a 1-2 minute speech on pre-selected topic for the workshop.

- Leadership Concepts
- Team Building:
- You cannot execute the strategic plan by yourself. How to make your executive board a team? What are activities that you should do to build that team? How do you foster accountability/responsibility? How do you then extend that to your chapter members? Leadership by example.

- Learn about what variables go into creating a team
- Learn about concepts in creating an effective team
- Leadership Styles
- Description: Take the Myers Briggs or other leadership style test. Learn more about yourself and how to learn how to use your self-knowledge to work better with others. Learn how you can administer this test to your members so that they can also learn more about them. Understanding the difference between the concepts of leadership and how you can use them as tools.

- Description: Being in a leadership position, one will be faced with certain decisions where the choices are not always black and white. Member will learn tools to make better decisions based on socially accepted standards of what is "right" and "wrong".

Graduate Curriculum - Graduate Leadership Institute (GLI) (subject to change)
The Graduate Leadership Institute (GLI) will serve to further develop personal awareness of leadership traits among graduate students. Six essential leadership traits have been identified as Purpose & Direction, Motivation, Culture, Mentorship, Competence, and Innovation. The purpose of the GLI will be to provide leadership training for graduate students to be successful not only in graduate school, but even beyond whether they pursue academia, industry, government, or even entrepreneurship.
Purpose & Direction In order to truly be successful as a graduate student, it is important to understand the mission and path of a graduate student and learn how to navigate the world of graduate school and beyond.
Motivation Motivation is an important key in every leader’s life. This workshop is intended to help you find your passion and how as a Hispanic engineer, SHPE can be a part of that inner drive. Graduate students will learn how they can become Ambassadors for the mission of SHPE.
Culture Hispanic engineers are highly sought because they are multicultural and multilingual. Learn how to maximize your culture and values as a strength in your career and how they will help you achieve your life goals.
Mentorship All successful leaders have been helped by others and this concept of mentorship is what will help our Hispanic community become even more successful in grooming quality Hispanic technical talent.
Competence Competence is at the core of any successful leader. Learn how to hone your leverage your degree as an engineer and how to complement them with effective communication and presentation skills.
Innovation In our rapidly changing world, it is important to learn how to be a driver and not a passenger in regards to research and development as well as innovation management. Many of today’s most successful leaders have been at the forefront, fostering and leading innovation in their fields.

- Engage new members while strengthening and retaining participation from current, dedicated members
