Northrop Grumman Systems Corporation Tour

Northrop Grumman Aerospace Systems is unique in its integrated approach to both the air and space sides of the business. Increasingly, the organization is leveraging technology, processes, expertise and people across domains. The company’s vision is to be the leader in advancing freedom and advancing discovery by providing our customers with innovative and affordable integrated air, space and ground solutions. The proximity to one another of the company’s industry-leading space and air manufacturing facilities allows for an exciting and an educationally enriching experience for both Engineers and students in STEM.

Space Park, Redondo Beach

Many of the world’s most sophisticated and pioneering spacecraft, rocket engines and astronautical observatories have been developed here. Northrop Grumman is currently developing the James Webb Space Telescope, successor to the Hubble. The Webb Space Telescope is an engineering marvel. It will orbit almost a million miles from earth and will be built with a five-layer sunshield with each layer the size of a tennis court to keep the mirror operating at optimum temperature. The telescope’s 6.5 meter diameter primary mirror could fit seven Hubble Telescope mirrors and is made from 18 hexagonal segments of polished Beryllium. The Webb Telescope will peer into the farthest reaches of space back to a few hundred thousand years after the Big Bang to help us better understand the origins of the universe. The visit would include a tour of the high bay where some of the components are being assembled.

El Segundo Manufacturing Center

Northrop Grumman is responsible for the design and production of the ship set of the F/A-18 Super Hornet, the U.S. Navy’s frontline carrier-based aircraft. The shipset includes the center/aft fuselage section, twin vertical tails and associated subsystems. The Hornet entered service in 1983, the Super Hornet in 2001. In order to help extend the service life of the original Hornets, we also produce replacement center barrels for those aircraft. The center barrel serves as the attachment point for the wings and the main landing gear. Recently, the company celebrated two significant milestones: The deliveries of the 500th Super Hornet ship set and the 300th Hornet center barrel. The tour includes a visit to the company’s state-of-the-art F/A-18 manufacturing facilities as well as visit to the Integrated Composites Center, where Northrop Grumman has pioneered the use of high-strength, lightweight graphite composite materials used throughout the structure of the F/A-18.
